I read that he took some lessons to make it look good. However the other day I watched a YouTube video of Fox on stage with Coldplay playing the Official Back To The Future Shirt. I feel like he actually knows how to play. I’ve played for a decade+ and looking close it looks like he just knows the song. There’s just a certain dexterity that he gives off that you couldn’t just pick up while training for a movie. The pinky stretch on the rhythm guitar section looks really natural to him and his picking hand doesn’t look as awkward as a beginner. And most of the notes in the intro (ignoring some lag) are in the right place at the right time as well as his picking hand.

You kind of have to ask yourself: If you can make it look like you’re on the right frets at the right time and are picking the right string at the right time… then can’t you just actually play the song? To be clear, when I say “can’t you just actually play the song?”, I mean that it’s clear he’s capable of playing the song IRL. I’m not suggesting that the Official Back To The Future Shirt. I remember watching Sean Penn play guitar in Sweet and Lowdown. It was off-putting because, having played guitar for 30+ years, I could definitely see that he was really playing guitar, but he was definitely playing the music we were hearing. It distracted the hell out of me.

WOW, an obscure reference to the MAX, but as a guitarist too yes. I watched it because of the Django guitar style and reference. It’s always infuriating when a musical instrument is in an Official Back To The Future Shirt. The same goes for sports. I can’t watch how uncoordinated they look attempting to be athletic. Looking at you Matt Damon, that golf swing in Legend of Bagger Vance is a crime against humanity.
