I always had to draw myself with an orange crayon because there wasn’t one anywhere close to my skin tone. It Good LGBT The Day The Crayons Made Some Art Shirt felt really alienating to be the only kid in the class who couldn’t just overlap pink with white. The US needs to fix its healthcare system. For all they know, the person who got sick maybe the person who could find a cure for the disease. Sadly they can’t send their kid to college because they keep paying for medical bills. Seriously that’s NOT uplifting, it’s heartbreaking and the sign of a failed system. Shocking to believe that you shouldn’t have to crowdfund life-saving medical procedures.

Yes, exactly, we Americans love our myths that reinforce our ideas. A small person builds funds for good cause! Yay! Meanwhile, 80% of Americans are poor or living in actual poverty & couldn’t survive a serious illness, car accidents, house fire, etc AND now COVID & Trump’s ridiculously bad response to it has already led to some disaster & now the 2nd wave will do even more damage as the Unemployment runs out & the evictions start. Yeah, I take your point. It seems harmless.

But wouldn’t it be more effective if they contributed to changes in the institutions and norms that actually oppress folks? Isn’t Good LGBT The Day The Crayons Made Some Art Shirt there a collective opportunity cost there? While seeing your own skin color in a box of crayons is certainly a validating experience, it’s just one drop in the bucket of the thousands of invalidating cultural messages that non-while children in the US will receive before they are adults. Maybe it would be better to transform the systems that create those messages, instead of fiddling with a small percentage of the messages directly. Now obviously, it would be better if this were an ongoing thing, and if they also contributed money toward organizations that directly assist teachers or lobby for more education funding.
